A WORD ABOUT BLUE GERMAN SHEPHERDS...
Blue is a recessive dilution gene that must be carried by both the sire and dam of a litter. If blue pups are produced, both parents carry the gene, despite the attempts breeders or stud owners may make to "blame" the other party. Unlike blues in some other breeds (Dobermans, etc.), there are no known health issues directly pertaining to the gene for blue in German Shepherds.
However, the German (SV) standard does not allow for blue and blue dogs may not receive conformation ratings or be bred according to that standard. Because of this, many breeders "cull" (kill) these puppies at birth and never mention that they ever existed. Often times, this is purely political- owners of high dollar stud dogs don't want blues associated with their dog so they sweep them under the rug, but the genes are still out there, and they crop up from time to time. Blues are something of a "dirty little secret" among reputable German Shepherd Breeders.
The fact is, they happen (more often than most admit!) and they are just as likely as their "correctly" colored littermates to be wonderful animals...they just cannot be shown under the SV. For this reason, the blue pups will be sold on limited AKC registration only, which means they may be trialed and/or shown in any venue you wish (except SV conformation); you just cannot register puppies from them. ALL BLUES HAVE BEEN PLACED. WE DO NOT ANTICIPATE ANY MORE, EVER.
